Job Description

The judicial assistant hired will work with a circuit judge and be responsible for the administrative and secretarial duties needed to effectively manage a busy circuit court division. The judicial assistant’s current assignment would be to an active criminal division, but this may be subject to change in the future.   

Examples of Work

Schedules and coordinates motions, hearings, and conferences.

Compose correspondence, memoranda, notices, orders, and other documents.

Prepare notices of hearings for cases put on the calendar by the judge.

Handle motions and pleadings, including contacting parties to set hearings.

Prepare draft orders and edit and proofread final orders.

Education and Training Guidelines

High School diploma or GED; 

Two years of college or vocational school education in paralegal, secretarial skills, computer operations or a closely related field; and

Three years of related experience. 

Competencies

Knowledge and responsible experience as a legal secretary or paralegal.

Excellent typing, spelling, and grammar skills.

Working knowledge of family court rules and procedures.

Able to be professional and diplomatic in dealing with attorneys and the public.

Skills and ability to operate standard office equipment, including personal computers, word processing, electronic calendaring.

Skills in data entry applications, for case management.
